"The labour market is not strong, that's a given": CIBC economist

Editor's note: after releasing its July jobs report on Aug. 8 showing 200 jobs were created overall, Statistics Canada said on Aug. 12 it had made an unspecified error in the labour force survey. The agency released an amended jobs report on Aug. 15. The clip of the interview below was recorded before the corrected report was released.

After weak job numbers came out on Friday, Benjamin Tal, Deputy Chief Economist of CIBC World Markets Inc., talked about a troubling pattern over the past year.

"The labour market is not strong, that's a given," he told CBC's The Lang and O'Leary Exchange.

Here is Tal's 60-second take, just in time for Oliver's summer policy retreat on Tuesday.
